Real Overdose (#27)
One Last Thing open with four tunes that are maybe a little more experimental than their "Foster portfilio" CD, its mostly very mellow and there's lots of complexity happening with the drums and guitars. Impassioned emotional rock like Sunny Day Real Estate meets Fugazi. 'step 2" is probably our fave because it wakes up and rocks, but its all ok. Crosstide start really quietly like Elliot or something, definitely a lot of Radiohead in there too, then next track they get louder and more powerful, a bit more Texas Is The Reason with cool vocals and tons of stuff happening in and under the song. Would it mean anything to ya if we mentioned Muse too? "1957 Trustee" is another cool poppy hit, they close with a nice acoustic slice of angst in 'summer" and we"d have to say steal the show. Looking forward to the re-release of their debut EP.

Seems like Portland has at least two awesome bands. This is an older release, and Crosstide's full length album is already out for some time. Their older songs are already super but weaker than on the album. One Last Thing surprised me. I needed some time to understand what they want to tell me, but then they got me. It's the old concept of making music using contrasts. Noisy, quiet, sang vocals, screamed vocals, without sounding like one of these everyday screamo bands. The guitars don't sound too fat and instrument work and ideas are partly great. Cool bands, cool cd!
