Break to Broken

BREAK TO BROKEN formed in October of 2020 during a global pandemic which left the world in an isolating lockdown. Aussie, Clinton Maher, was looking for like-minded collaborators to help pull through his vision for a new music project. A post on a message board connected him with Eli Nowak and Justin Rauschkolb, both veterans of the late 90’s New Jersey punk scene, and the trio was formed. In spite of living on opposite sides of the globe, the three forged an instant musical bond and began to collaborate on songs.

Their debut album, The War on Sparrows delivers 12 songs ranging from ripping post punk/hardcore to introspective, almost dreamy, indie rock. The individual style, vocals, and lyrics of each member merge throughout the album, creating a unique sonic connection through a virtual collaboration.

• Ripcord Records released The War on Sparrows via limited edition cassette tape on August 19, 2022.
• Engineer Records is proud to release The War on Sparrows on limited edition 12" vinyl in October 2022.

BREAK TO BROKEN’s debut album, The War on Sparrows, summons the soul of the 80s and 90s Do It Yourself
hardcore scene. Every aspect of the LP from the recording and production to the album artwork was done by the band. The 12 songs on Sparrows showcase an impressive range spanning from ripping punk bangers to introspective, dreamy indie rock with a dash of melodic pop thrown in for good measure. From across the globe, BREAK TO BROKEN’s members speak of their formation, creative process, and what’s in store for them.

Small Music Scene YouTube Review (transcribed): http://youtu.be/-ZHVcBH4pM8

Hello and welcome to Small Music Scene, the ultimate underground music advocate. Today we have BREAK TO BROKEN who are a three way punk effort spanning America and Australia who definitely fall into the “under the radar” category but we should change that.

Let's start with getting you to check out their debut album, The War on Sparrows. They get off to a right dynamic start with Safe Space which is distinctly compiled of nifty rifts, catchy hooks, and strident lyrics discussing that fear of being easily riled up and triggered by the opinions of others.

The energetic and rhythmically riveting, Pyrite, (is next) with strong words centered around being foolish to trust such obvious scumbags who manipulate you and eventually stab you in the back to get themselves ahead of the rest of the crowd, including yourself.

They then ease up the gas to set the tone for the vulnerability themed, On The Beat. Then they get the buzz rolling back up for, Shut In, which features some of their best and most refined vocal work yet. In order to get across that inner desire to step up and make your voice heard.

The Dragon Slayers has a raw snappy punch to it plus the great chorus and the rad, firmly resonant, bass lines make a memorable impact. I can pretty much say the same for the kick-ass, Shadow of A Man, with extra added doses of fire to the singing, guitars, and drumming.

All around, Off My Mark, stands out with a grungier alternative rock vibe tip in comparison - and i'm not complaining! They pull this off superbly and they'll let you write it up with a shot of passion behind both of the performances and the committed, no-nonsense rating.

They continue to broaden their sound with the organically coarse and scuzzy, The Bad Nothing. Woken Up is a class banger that gives you a jolt and fires you up to stand as a united front and lead a revolution against all the injustice and other corrupt matters that collectively hold us down and wrecks our lives. My favorite line: people don't have ideas, ideas have people. That's top notch!

And that rebellious vibe pushes through into the rugged, Ampathy, emphasizing that those high up at the top must be made to listen to the working-class masses but that can't happen if no action is taken and we sit back on our butts.

Older is a straight-up killer track that hits hard and heavy. They throw some blows towards the evil of capitalist society in the steady running conclusion,  Sell Division.

BREAK TO BROKEN have smashed it with a very good provocative debut record. On top of being

sonically satisfying, the lyrical content is intriguing, challenging, and gets you

thinking - and there's certainly nothing wrong with giving your brain a wee shift in these uncertain questionable times.

Bottom line is this band demands your attention. Go check them out. You won't be let down.
