Personal Punk review the StraightXTeeth 7”

“Born out of shared shows across the Maritimes“, Two bands from the East Coast of Canada – TEETHOUT from Prince Edward Island and STRAIGHT ON TIL MORNING from Moncton, New Brunswick – come together on this split 7” to do things “the old-fashioned way: playing loud, making something physical, and putting it on wax.”

Short, lively and curiously nostalgic, this neat release aims to counter the deluge of digital-only material with an honest-to-god 7″ vinyl EP. TEETHOUT offer two songs of NOFX-derived skate punk, albeit less snotty than Fat Mike’s laughing boys. For Your Life features a fun, widdly bass, guitar squiggles and a runaway solo, while the terminally catchy Tonight plays it a little straighter, throwing some flannel shirted grit into the pot. Hard to believe this band formed in 2024, releasing the five-track Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is a year later – reviewed here. STRAIGHT ON TIL MORNING are new to me but their sole offering (All For Nothing Pt. 2) has all the meaty guitars on a solid, melodic punk banger, a thoroughly unexpected, atmospheric build-up providing an emotional pay-off.  Love it.

The vinyl is pressed on recycled material, so every copy is unique. I understand there’s been some debate over the sound quality compared to ‘virgin vinyl’ but, I mean, this just sounds like a banging punk single to me. My copy is a fetching, swirly shade of what the wife tells me is teal. How’s that for a bit of high-minded discernment?

Eco-Mix Vinyl limited to 200 Copies Worldwide. Released jointly by High End Denim Records (CAN), Punk Rock Radar (USA) and Engineer Records (UK&EU).
