Suspect Device review the new 1919 double A side single
I have been a fan of 1919 since their single ‘Caged’ which, because of its Killing Joke like sound, caught my attention back in 1982. I picked up another single, ‘Repulsion’ and the “Machine’ album too, but then they seemed to disappear. I kept playing those records, not realising I’d somehow missed the ‘Cry Wolf’ and ‘Earth Song’ 7”s, however, 17 or so years later I picked up the ‘Complete Collection’ CD which had everything I had and everything I’d missed. I was overjoyed when, in the mid 2010s they returned, I was pleased to find that, although less obviously Killing Joke influenced, their new stuff was great and I bought each release as it came out. Now, five years after their last recorded output comes a brand new, two track, single - and once again I find myself captivated by a 1919 record.
‘Last Dance Of The Departed’ has a real Bauhaus feel with its hypnotic bass line with the vocal style adding to that impression, it’s mesmerising and quite wonderful. The line “Or to work like a dog for the things you were told that you need” stood out for me, it sums up the shackles capitalism has us tied with. On the other side, ’Satellite Man’ has the guitars up front and has me thinking more of UK Decay and if pushed, I’d say it’s my favourite of the two songs here, although both are great.
I was excited when I saw that this single was coming out and, I’m pleased to say, it hasn’t disappointed one bit. (Tony)
