Hold my beer! Personal Punk review Gebretter’s ‘Pint Peddla’

Cologne, Germany’s five-piece GEBRETTER (BOARDS) formed in 2022. Pint Peddla is the follow-up to 2024s debut Trendshitter, though at nine tracks in under twenty minutes, it’s more of a mini-album. As if to accentuate this, the vinyl is limited to 500, individually stamped, one-sided copies. It looks very cool.

GEBRETTER’s style, on the surface at least, is old school, irreverent hardcore. 3rd Grade‘s motoring punk rock staggers out of the same bar as POISON IDEA, though with vocals that straddle gritty ire with a little more expression. That it is followed by two sub-one-minute bangers – Chat GBH‘s blast-beat/slow-drag tag team and German Tanks‘ rat-a-tat hardcore with gang shouts-a-go-go – is a delight. Equally effective when they slow it down, Goodbye never feels its four minutes; a sinister, revolving guitar, followed by an angry chorus burst with a tinge of anarcho-crust, it’s a furious, head-nodding classic for sure. They head back to cheeky hardcore on an ode to weed (Hedge), followed by the manic basslines of Porcelain Syndrome‘s fastcore, before finding their TURBONEGRO groove on the title track, name-checking Ass Cobra along the way. Finally, the mid-paced Lääve is as melodic as it gets, even as the vocals are throatier, and Yupp pummels with a mix of speeds, a rousing chorus and some old school “bleeaurgh!” backing. Ya gotta love it.

The lyrics are both interesting and a challenge, given that they switch between English, German and Kölsch. The title and artwork convey an irreverence not wholly undeserved; 3rd Grade‘s first section translates as: “parquet sanding! indoor sports, shorts, blood tackle, idiot, volley hey! with the bike through that gravel, that bike, it then slips away from you…” That said, there are serious topics. Their stance on Open AI is clear enough to the monolingual among us, even with Chat GBH‘s bilinguality; “know everything, do everything, make everything, everything soon – chat gbh” before raging; “Sam Altman, you spoilt our life“. Elsewhere, there’s the anti-military industrial complex sentiment of German Tanks, Porcelain Syndrome‘s ode to resistance and Goodbye‘s meditation on grief:

nobody likes to say goodbye…goodbye forever

nobody likes to say goodbye….we say goodbye forever

nobody likes to do it / but the choice ain’t ours

nobody wants to do it / that choice is now ours

nobody likes to do it / but it was part of us

Before things get too serious though, the title track’s daft tilt of the glass to TURBONEGRO and the joys of BMXing arrives in all it’s ridiculous glory (“got asscobra blasting on my headphones loud, I don’t want to hear sirens cars or stupid bells, I want to ride my bicycle! – bikezilla“). You get the drift. There’s something about a band who can take a stand, express compassion and then just cut loose. I mean, have you seen the sleeve art?

This is right up my street. Short, fast and loud, obviously, but with enough stylistic variation to cut through; gritty, expressive vocals, rumbling bass, meaty guitars and taut drumming, the band are tightly wound, veritably bristling with righteous energy. Apparently, they get a little theatrical live which makes sense. Hopefully, they’ll make it to these shores at some point, but for now? Pint Peddla‘ll do it.

Released January 23rd 2026 by Scene Police Records, Engineer Records and Demon Records, on vinyl limited to 500 copies, hand-stamped by “master brewers”.
