Underdog review the Her Heads On Fire / Big Shipping – Tour split CD
Two bands, four songs, with no common style program - but a lot of pressure in the cooker. Her Heads On Fire from Chicago bring their mixture of emo, alternative and edgy rock, and you’ll notice influences of their former. The first song comes from the sessions for "Am I Not Your Girl?" and accordingly, sits between agitated melodies and rough guitar work. This is followed by "A Night Like This", a Cure cover version, which does not try to recreate the classic true to the original, but gives it a much more rocking, powerful contour.
Big Shipping from Devon in the UK are less about the grand gesture than about dynamics and strumming guitars. They build up their two new songs with enough tension so that the jams become much more than mere bonus material. Somewhere between post-hardcore edge, indie rock and melodic punk, the songs are created that draw their energy more from the interaction than from high-gloss production.
Four tracks, two bands, recorded after their respective albums and with exactly the atmosphere you expect from a tour split.
Born out of a night together at the Exeter Cavern, the record therefore functions above all as a musical snapshot of a friendship: not an over-constructed concept, but four new songs that make you want to go on to the next round.
A small edition and a short listening pleasure - and for that very reason a nice piece of tour culture.
