Suspect Device review the new Jukebox Romantics and Calico Palace releases…
JUKEBOX ROMANTICS - This One Looks Cool CD/LP - Engineer
I reviewed these guys a while back when they released the 5 track “Fires Forming” ep and checking back I was suitably impressed, as I am now listening to this. This is a full album, 10 tracks, the last track, “The walk to Heartwood” being a 9 minute epic!, and stays in the “pop punk” territory of “Fires Forming” with hints of a more Hardcore sound in places. I compared them to Bouncing Souls and also Latterman last time out and I am going to stick with that, a smidge Alkaline Trio too maybe. These guys are New York based and have been around well over 10 years so I can imagine them being a real good, tight live band. A 5 piece with 2 guitars and everyone contributing vocals, so some strong harmonies and group back-ups. The production on here is top drawer, clear and powerful, and the song-writing is aces. The cover artwork is a cool collage thing of black and white photos.

CALICO PALACE - Golden Days CDEP - Engineer
This is a 4 track ep from a UK based pop punk type band and a real strong release it is too. Not sure if or what they’ve released previously to this but the band sounds like they know what they’re doing in the song-writing department, 4 really strong songs. These guys can be compared to New Found Glory and other bands of that ilk, and when it’s done right this stuff really hits the spot! It’s all over pretty quick, which can only be a good sign, the title track (2nd track) being the pick of the bunch in my opinion, but they’re all good, as is production.
