The third instalment of Abermals’ 2024 single series, ‘Vertigo’ premieres today on Thoughts Words Action, YouTube, Spotify, etc and is another step for the trio into unknown territories.
While musically focusing on increased tightness while playing less “unnecessary” notes, lyrically the song deals a cocktail of feelings comprised of uncertainty, anxiety, the physical limitations of ageing and weirdness.
Hailing from the island of Mallorca, Abermals is Chris Spaeth’s latest musical incarnation, after having played in such diverse bands as German late 90s/early 00s screamo outfit Tidal, folk-pop duo Belvès or garage rockers Jigsaw Jackson.
Joined by a battle-tested rhythm section comprised of local madcaps Alberto Abad and Enrique Alarcón, Abermals emerged during the pandemic in 2020. The year after, they self-released their first collection of songs entitled THESE BROKEN BODIES. 2022 saw the release of their second album REASONS TO TRAVEL, co-released by Engineer Records (UK), Sell The Heart Records (USA), Runaway Records (Spain) and Memento (Germany).
Aside from their home turf, Abermals have also performed on the neighboring island of Menorca as well as playing several legendary Spanish mainland venues, including the Wurlitzer in Madrid, Atzavara Club in Sant Feliu de Guíxols or Sala Vol in Barcelona.
Musically, the band members’ 90s upbringing can easily be heard, resulting in a sound reminiscent of the Indie Rock of the era, along with a strong DIY ethos. Their sound is a tapestry woven from diverse styles such as power pop, math rock, hardcore, punk and emo. Abermals’ third album will be released in the fall of 2024.
